New Tax Credit for Window Film
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 provides federal tax credits for homeowners who make certain energy-efficient improvements. Window film has been added to the list of improvements for 2007. Anyone who has purchased qualifying 3M window film products between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2007 can receive a 2007 tax credit. A tax credit directly reduces your over all income tax, which is much better than a deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax. Homeowners can receive a 10% credit on the costs of qualified window film products, up to a maximum of $500.
Complete IRS form 5695 and file 2007 Income Tax Returns by April 15, 2008. Forms are downloadable on the IRS website or at http://www.energystar.gov/, along with a list of other available energy efficiency tax credits. Maintain copies of the dealer invoice and the manufacturer's certification statement for your records. Installation costs are not eligible for the tax credit. The manufacturer's certification statement determines which products qualify, based upon where you reside.
